A proper inspection of your doors and windows will tell the real story! Here are a few questions to keep in mind as you make the tour of your home.
Does condensation prevent you from seeing your garden or the scenery?
Does water tend to condense on the surface of your windows, in the corners or on the jambs or supports?
Does the paint blister or lift in places? Are there rings of mould on the surface?
Has humidity infiltrated between the double panes of glass?
Is the caulking cracked?
Is the flashing in good condition?
Is the room comfortable or hard to heat or difficult to cool with an air-conditioner?
Would you like more light or a better view of your garden or the scenery?
Would you prefer direct access to your terrace from the kitchen or to the patio from your living room?
Do you have a good view of your children playing in the backyard or in the pool?
Do you spend a lot of time on the maintenance of your doors and windows each year? Is this maintenance complicated – windows hard to open, impossible to reach the glass, numerous grids that are tedious to clean?
Are your doors and windows in harmony with your exterior?
Are your doors and windows easy to open and close?
Are your storm windows and screens properly in place, efficient and easy to open?
Are the latches, door handles and locks safe?
Do your doors have peepholes, deadbolts and sturdy hinges?
Have you observed water or air infiltrating through your doors or windows? What is the state of your weather-stripping?
When replacing or repairing your doors and windows, they will be easier to open and close and the locks will be more secure. The new generations of doors and windows reduce heat loss in the winter and control the heat gain in the summer, which will result in significant savings in heating and air-conditioning. It will also be wonderful to see the scenery with no more condensation on the glass surface or corners. New doors and windows will provide increased comfort and substantial energy savings, year after year.
Increasing the natural light, creating a better view on the garden, adding an emergency exit or creating a more impressive entry are only some of the thousands of reasons to add new windows to your home. For a single room, up to one square meter of glass surface for every ten meters of floor space is ideal and it is preferable to have a limited number of large openings rather than several small ones.
